Family Force 5 (06/30/09)

Family Force 5

Photobucket

From Pure Volume:
"There's a delicate balance between the intertwining worlds of artistry, entertainment and humor, but for dance-derived alternative rockers Family Force 5, it's an ecstatic equilibrium that remarkably illustrates all three elements. With tongue firmly planted in cheek, the Atlanta-based five-some are just as likely to get the party started as they are to escort audiences into an alternate reality. Even so, the band never compromises album creativity, while simultaneously hearkening back to the days of massive spectacles on tour.

The group's sophomore release, Dance Or Die, oozes with over-the-top illustrations, charging out of the gate with funky rhythms, percolating club grooves, undeniably infectious hooks and instantaneous sing-a-longs. Imagine an inventive evolution of the band's eye-opening debut, Business Up Front, Party in the Back, blended with Prince getting down at a Daft Punk concert where Michael Jackson busts out the moonwalk in the center of the dance floor.

"Listening to Family Force 5 is like lighting a cluster of firecrackers in your mouth," offers guitarist Derek Mount (known to fans as Chap Stique), recommending a spin of Dance Or Die over that daredevil antic. "This album provides a connection and an escape, and it's guaranteed to make your booty shake and your head bang. It's greasy, slimy and soupy, yet still very slick and shiny at the same time."

Indeed, the disc is replete with rippling rhythms, assaulting electronics and a raucous rock 'n roll underpinning, but beyond these sonic elements, there’s also an all-encompassing futuristic vibe. From the sci-fi synth textures of "Fever" to the thrash-tinged robotic rocker "Radiator" to the ultra contagious title track, consider this project to be the musical version of Mad Max meets 2001: A Space Odyssey."

MGMT'S OFFICIAL SITE

From last.fm:
"MGMT is a neo-psychedelic group which formed in 2002 in Brooklyn, New York, United States. The band consists of multi-instrumentalists Andrew VanWyngarden (vocals, guitar, keyboards, drums) and Ben Goldwasser (vocals, keyboards, synths, drums), both alumni of Wesleyan University. Originally the band was named “Management,” but it was later changed when they found out there were several other bands with that name.

Their most popular songs are “PlayTime to Pretend” , which has been featured on the motion pictures “21” and “Sex Drive” and on the TV shows “Skins”, “Gossip Girl” & “90210”, (the music video has reached over 11,000,000 views on YouTube) and “PlayElectric Feel”, their most purchased single on iTunes.

Electronic Indie Dance Rock began as a thesis project from music majors at Wesleyan University. They used to be known as “The Management” with songs about not quite growing up and a lot of nonsense. Despite this, ‘MGMT’ is pronounced by saying each letter.

Andrew VanWyngarden, one of the MGMT figureheads, is currently collaborating with of Montreal’s Kevin Barnes, with plans to release a record in 2008 under the name Blikk Fang. MGMT was on tour with Of Montreal in late 2005 (and again in 2007) and VanWyngarden appeared on stage during some performances on of Montreal’s summer ‘06 tour.

MGMT is planning to release a 2 disk album called “Congratulations” in January of 2010."

Hot Action Cop

From last.fm:
"The group released their self-titled debut album on Atlantic Records in 2003. Rob Werthner (vocalist/songwriter/frontman) formed the band back in the 1990s with bassist Luis Espaillat and drummer Kory Knipp. With many musical influences (including the Bloodhound Gang, Eminem, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Limp Bizkit), he came up with plenty of songs with funky beats and lyrics about sex.

The name of the band comes from the irreverent nickname that Werthner gave the boyfriend of his ex-girlfriend after she and Werthner broke up in the early ’90s. He was an NYPD officer with a feathery out-of-date haircut.

Their song ‘Fever for the Flava’ was featured on the soundtrack of a few films, most notably the American Wedding and Grind sountracks (as well as appearing in episodes of the shows King of the Hill and The Man Show); a version with custom lyrics (about cars instead of sex) appeared in Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2."

Devendra Banhart (06/29/09)

Devendra Banhart

DEVENDRA BANHART'S OFFICIAL SITE

From iTunes:
"Devendra Banhart spent most of his teenage years with an acoustic guitar in his hand, performing in clubs he was most likely too young to be allowed into. The demos from these times, some recorded on four-track, some played into answering machines over long-distance phone conversations, made up his debut, 2002's Oh Me, OhMy.... These were strang, shrieking, surreal songs barely held together by finger-picked guitar and imagery that dealt with flesh, teeth, and animals. They were strong songs though - indebted to bloues and folk singers from ages ago with hints of March Bolan's psychedelic quaver. His next two albums refined this sound, putting Banhart in a real studio and allowing the songwriting to flower into a more cohesive type of nouveau psych-folk. He has continued to grow in musical scope - leaving behind the barefoot, acoustic guitar-wielding mystic and forging ahead as a semi-electric band leader whose music incorporates Brazilian sambas, crunchy rock, whispered piano ballads, funk, tribal weirdness, and overall hirsute freakiness."

From last.fm:
"Devendra Banhart (Born 30th May 1981 in Houston, Texas, but brought up in Venezuela) is a folk singer-songwriter whose first few records were released on the young god records label from New York City. His most recent CD was released by XL Recordings. He is one of the most popular artists to come out of the “new weird america” movement, which includes performers such as Faun Fables, Viking Moses, Jack Rose, Jana Hunter, Arborea, The MV & EE Medicine Show, Currituck Co., Six Organs of Admittance, and The Royal We, among others. He also often joins the band known as Vetiver.

Banhart is considered to have an eclectic style, with many of his songs seemingly following a stream-of-consciousness vein, being hard to decipher and non-literal. His music tends to consist of fairly simple guitar melodies with minimal other instrumentation, and his lyrical themes are often surreal and naturalistic. His involvement in the Los Angeles artist community is reflected in Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon, released in September 2007. He gained some underground notoriety in New York for performing several of his early shows with underwear on his head for the duration of the performance.

Banhart’s most recent tour of the United States saw him perform with his full band, which is currently known as Power Mineral. Power Mineral included Andy Cabic (Vetiver), Greg Rogove (Priestbird), Noah Georgeson, Luckey Remington, Pete Newsom, Otto Hauser (Vetiver, Currituck Co., Espers, Nick Castro), Kevin Barker (Currituck Co.), and others."

Death From Above 1979 (06/29/09)

Death From Above 1979

Photobucket

DEATH FROM ABOVE 1979'S OFFICIAL SITE

From last.fm: "Death from Above 1979 were the Toronto-based duo of Jesse F. Keeler on bass/synths and Sebastien Grainger on vocals/drums. Refusing to employ a lead guitarist, they played loud synth infused noise-funk, often referred to as dance punk, on the drum and bass combination alone. Originally named just “Death From Above”, the duo changed their name after a legal dispute with New York City dance-punk label Death From Above (known as DFA Records since the September 11, 2001 attacks). “Death from above” was written on a helicopter in the movie Apocalypse Now, which was copyrighted in 1979. However, Grainger says this is simply a coincidence; 1979 was chosen as it was, amongst other reasons, “the year I was born.”

Death From Above 1979 had planned on recording the follow up to its debut full-length You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine. There were plans to release it in three versions: the traditional bass/drums lineup, a full-band lineup with musicians assembled by Grainger, and a remix album. The albums featuring a full band and remixes were supposedly to be released on the band’s official website.

In 2005 the video for “Romantic Rights” won a VideoFACT award at the MuchMusic Video Music Awards.

On August 4, 2006, the band announced they had decided to split “almost a year ago” due to the strained relationship between the two - claiming they only talked during interviews and just before shows - not to mention the fact that they had achieved all their aims after the record went gold in their native Canada."

ATREYU'S OFFICIAL SITE

From last.fm: "Atreyu is a five-piece metalcore band from Orange County, California that formed in 1998. The band consists of vocalist Alex Varkatzas, guitarists Dan Jacobs and Travis Miguel, bassist Marc McKnight and drummer and vocalist Brandon Saller. The band was originally named “Retribution” but, when they found out that another band from Hemet, California had been using the name, they changed their name to “Atreyu,” after the character from the fantasy movie The Neverending Story (by Michael Ende).

Atreyu formed in sunny, bright Orange County, California back in 1998, originally under the name Retribution, but then changed their name to Atreyu, a fictional character from The Neverending Story because the band members at that time deemed the name more fitting to the band, and the fact that a band from Hemet, California had already taken the name.

Atreyu’s independent EP release, Visions was released somewhere between 1998 and 1999, and was sold at their live performances. Their second release, Fractures in the Facade of Your Porcelain Beauty was a short EP released by underground label Tribunal Records and featured tracks that would be re-worked in later releases. Atreyu signed with Victory Records in 2001, and their most critically acclaimed works would be to come from these releases."

The Weepies

THE WEEPIES OFFICIAL SITE

From last.fm: "In 2006, The Weepies big label debut Say I Am You came out on Nettwerk Records. After an initial hard-scrabble tour in their compact car as a duo, Deb Talan & Steve Tannen’s music appeared in more than a dozen TV shows, as well as several major motion pictures.

Their iTunes sales topped the folk charts in eight countries. Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol nominated them for a Short List Music Prize, and Mandy Moore asked them to write with her and sing on her album. They were invited to open for the Indigo Girls and invited onto the Hotel Café Tour; they played the Oxegen Festival in Ireland, the Hurricane Festival in Germany, and T in the Park in Scotland. Their MySpace player hit 2 million plays. JCPenney and Old Navy used their tunes as the theme songs for their major holiday TV campaigns.

When The Weepies returned home in 2007, they were exhausted.

“2006 was amazing. Coming off the road in 2007 should have been this blissed-out time with so much to celebrate, but it was totally depressing. Our rented shack in the California hills was cold, it had a leaky roof and there were mice living in it. Our electric guitar had been destroyed on the last plane flight of the year. We hadn’t seen most of our close friends in months.”

“We were empty,” says Talan. “We both felt dark after being in the bright lights for a year. We were looking to reconnect with what moved us about music in the first place. We needed to hide out and write.”"
